September 1982
Starts Karate at age 27 at the Moray House College Karate Club under the instruction of Sensei Wilson MacNeill.
August 1983
Leaves Moray House College Karate Club to join newly created Portobello High School Karate Club under the instruction of Sensei Steve Roy.
December 1983
Grades to 9th Kyu.
September 1985
As a 4th Kyu has an horrific knee injury that almost ends his karate career.
November 1985
Whilst still in plaster resumes his karate training.
October 1986
Grades to 3rd Kyu.
April 1992
First meets and trains with Kanazawa Kancho at Stirling University as a 1st Kyu.
September
1992
Trains with Keinosuke Enoeda Sensei at course in St Andrew's.
June
1994
Graded to Shodan (1st Dan) under the Satori Karate Do.
November
1994
Takes Part in Open Weekend Course in Slough with Mr Kanazawa.
1996
Joins SKKIF under the Instruction of Jim Palmer Sensei.
November
1997
Graded to Nidan (2nd Dan) under Kanazawa Hirokazu Kancho at Stirling Honbu Dojo.
March
1999
Mr Kanazawa Gives his permission for Tom and Mike Russell to open a Dojo in Edinburgh.
August
1999
Kanazawa Shotokan Ryu - Edinburgh Dojo opens its doors for the first time under the Instruction of Brothers Tom and Mike Russell at the Forrestine's Centre, Broomhouse Road.
November
2002
Graded to Sandan. (3rd Dan) under Kanazawa Kancho in Stirling. Also presented with 20 year service certificate by Master Kanazawa Kancho.
March
2003
Promoted to one of only 3 Senior instructors of Kanazawa Shotokan Ryu Scotland by Sensei Jim Palmer.
May
2008
Graded to Yondan. (4th Dan) under Kanazawa Kancho in Stirling.
